22638VIC Certificate I in EAL (Access) is a qualification with outcomes that focus on the development of English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills directly related to immediate personal and social needs together with electives selected to develop relevant social, settlement and numeracy skills and knowledge.

The purpose of this qualification is preparation for participation in further English language study or vocational training which may include English language support, or employment.

There is no direct link between this accredited course and licensing, legislative and/or regulatory requirements.

Entry Requirements

Academic requirements:

There are no entry requirements for this qualification as per the training package rules.

Admission requirements:

The courses contained in the EAL Framework are aligned to ISLPR and IELTS levels as a guide to placement in courses. (EAL Framework, Appendix D)

The entry to the 22638VIC Certificate I in EAL (Access) qualification is determined according to the following criteria:

-       a participant’s learning and pathway needs including employability skills, literacies (digital and other literacies), and further educational and vocational training needs.

-       a participant’s current English language skills. (The Listening and Speaking and Reading and Writing units in the Framework may provide the basis for initial assessment processes and placement of participants at the appropriate proficiency level). A learner’s suitability should be assessed against a suitable framework such as the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) or the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR).

-       a participant’s prior formal education experience, both overseas and in Australia

-       any prior EAL learning

There are no barriers to entry based on age (other than post school students over 16), gender, social or educational background.

Selection of learners for 22638VIC Certificate I in EAL (Access) is based on their need to develop English language, literacy, numeracy and knowledge skills for further study, employment or community participation.

Student should have and entry ACSF level 1 with an exit level of 1/1+ as per the Appendix C of EAL Framework. This is tested during our Pre-training review. Each student is required to complete the Language, Literacy & Numeracy assessment to determine what level they are currently working at & if they are suitable to proceed with this qualification.

Where students do not have skills, they may be provided with additional support to develop their literacy and numeracy skills to this level if appropriate, or alternatively they will be provided information on other more appropriate courses.  

Students should meet any of the following residency requirements:

-       be an Australian citizen

-       be a permanent resident

-       be a New Zealand citizen (visa 444)

-       be an Asylum seeker or a Temporary Protection Visa holder (relevant referral form required)

-       Retrenched employees (relevant referral form required)

A matrix comparing a range of EAL scales and accredited course exit levels is provided in Appendix C of EAL Framework to assist in determining the most appropriate placement of learners according to their existing English language proficiency.

USI Requirements:

Learners are required to comply with Evidence of enrolments at the time of enrolment with Stirling Institute. Students are required to provide appropriate forms of IDs to confirm their eligibility to enroll in this course. Students are required to apply for unique student identification (USI) number while their study period in Australia and this information will be handed to the students at the time of orientation. IT Literacy Requirements:

This qualification requires a basic understanding and use of computers and the internet. Basic understanding and use of computers will be required for the students to be able to do research and extend their knowledge acquired in class. Students will be required to be able to connect to Zoom if classes are required to be completed virtually. Support will be provided as required to develop the students’ skills via free support classes and instructions and virtual class etiquette available on our website.

+ Delivery

This course is delivered face to face in a classroom environment with All delivery is undertaken in the face-to-face classroom and simulation practical session with some formative learning activities required by the student outside the classroom. Assessment of the unit occurs throughout the unit delivery with final assessment of competency at the end of the unit. Where a unit requires work placement then the unit final assessment of competency will occur at the end of the work placement.

The course is designed to run over 30 weeks
